A member of the Independent High Authority for Elections, Muhammad al-Tilili Mansiri, confirmed that the Council of the Authority, which convened on May 13, 2022, submitted four proposals regarding the electoral calendar in an official correspondence addressed to the President of the State, Qais Saied, 5 days ago (last Friday), until the decree is issued in the light of it. regarding the revision of the Elections and Referendum Law, adding, “We are still waiting for the Presidency of the Republic to interact,” so that the commission can register voters and conduct the entire electoral process for the referendum, in a timely and optimal manner.
Regarding the electoral deadlines, Mansiri said in a statement to “Watt” today, Tuesday, “The best proposal for the electoral commission is to adopt electronic registration for each voter who has reached the age of 18,” noting that being satisfied with the current electoral registry “will deprive many voters of registration and participation.” Especially in light of the presence of about 2.5 million citizens who have reached the legal voting age since the last elections in 2019.
He stated that the Independent High Authority for Elections is constantly working and has initiated assignments for registration agents, regional components, and administrative staff in subsidiary bodies.
In response to the criticisms of some civil society organizations active in the field of elections, Mansouri affirmed that the commission “will deal openly with these associations, as it was in the past, and will allow them to monitor and observe from the registration stage until the final counting,” explaining that the electoral commission will grant accreditations to all associations. where the legal requirements are met.
The Electoral Commission announced in a statement today, Tuesday, that its council will hold a meeting tomorrow, Wednesday, in which it will deliberate some points, including examining the issue of checking the electoral register.
It is noteworthy that the executive management of the Independent High Authority for Elections, in its first meeting, held on May 13, had reviewed a draft electoral calendar to organize the referendum to be held on July 25, 2022. In its presentation to the new members of the Authority, it indicated that it proposes according to the current law regulating elections and the referendum. Registration for the referendum will start on May 27, 2022, with the immediate start of providing logistical preparations and opening the door for assignment debates, to assign registration agents, starting tomorrow, Saturday, May 14.
According to media statements by associations active in the field of elections, the election commission faces many challenges, mainly in the very narrow electoral time, as only 70 days separate the commission from the date of July 25, 2022, which requires a lot of preparation, procedures, arrangements and logistical matters.
In a related context, the head of the Atid Association, Bassam Maatar, said in a media statement that the period that was set for registering voters and updating the electoral register is a short period, pointing out that more than 2.5 million citizens have not yet obtained voter status, including 500,000 citizens who have reached the age of 18, since 2019. He considered that “ambiguity does not serve the referendum.”
