The determination of the stadium for the final of the African Champions League 2022 caused a crisis, after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) chose the Mohammed V compound in Casablanca, to host the meeting that brings together Moroccan Wydad Casablanca (the owner of the land), with Al-Ahly, on May 30th.

The “CAF” decision to hold the final match in Morocco came after the end of the first leg of the semi-final round, which witnessed Al-Ahly’s victory (4-0) over Algeria’s ES Setif, and Wydad beating Petro Atletico of Angola (3-1).

Al-Ahly’s administration decided to file an urgent complaint with the International Sports Court, requesting the cancellation of the “K” decision to hold the CAF Champions League final in the same stadium for the second year in a row, and the failure to provide justice and equal opportunities.

It is worth noting that this will be the third edition in the history of the African Champions League, which will witness the holding of the final from one match, after canceling the home and away system starting from the 2020 edition.

Balanced balance

Holding the Champions League final from one match is the traditional procedure in Europe since the tournament came to light in 1956, with the European Football Association “UEFA” determining the stadium before the start of the season.

At the present time, the stadium is determined several seasons before it, and we now know that the final version (2024-2025) will be held at the Allianz Arena in Munich, Germany.

Since the start of the European Champions League, the final has been held 4 times at the stadium of one of the two sides of the final, and the hosts have won twice and lost twice as well.

The “Santiago Bernabeu” stadium, the stronghold of Real Madrid, hosted the final of the second edition (1956-1957) between Real, the defending champion at the time, and the Italian Fiorentina, and the royal team won a double without a response.

Italian Inter Milan won the title in the 1964-1965 edition after winning the final at its “San Siro” stadium against Benfica, with a 1-0 win.

But in the 1983-1984 edition, Rome lost the Italian final at its “Olympico” stadium to Liverpool on penalties, after the match ended in a 1-1 draw.

Bayern Munich also fell at its “Allianz Arena” in the 2011-2012 final, also on penalties, against Chelsea, after a 1-1 draw.
