Saudi Energy Minister: We seek to develop the Al-Durra field... and this is the date of production of 13 million barrels per day - Energy

Saudi Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman revealed his country’s readiness to increase its crude oil production to more than 13 million barrels per day, by the end of 2026 or early 2027, in addition to efforts with Kuwait to develop the Dorra field in the divided zone.

The minister announced, during his participation in an energy conference in Bahrain, today, Monday, that his country is preparing to reach the volume of its crude oil production to 13.4 million barrels per day by 2027 according to the production of the divided zone, while maintaining this level of production in case the market needs it, except He made it clear that there were no plans to export methane, as its production would cover domestic consumption.

The Saudi-Saudi Energy Minister clarified that the current refining capacity is not commensurate with demand, and that shifting energy production from crude oil to gas and renewable energy at the local level will provide about one million barrels per day that will be consumed locally, to be ready for export.

Durra field development

Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman said that both Kuwait and Saudi Arabia are working on discussing the Al-Durra gas field crisis with Iran, as the resources there are a common interest for the two countries, stressing that the development of the field will continue in any case, because the State of Kuwait needs gas, and it cannot be deviated from the path. He pointed out that the Kingdom is not looking at more investments in Aramco’s upstream activities abroad, because it carries out a lot of downstream activities, explaining that Saudi Arabia will not waste money elsewhere, as production can reach between 13.2 to 13.4 million barrels per day of crude oil. .

The Saudi Energy Minister added that the depletion of production capacities at all levels in the energy sector is a global issue that must be taken care of, adding: “We encourage policy makers to announce their need for investments in crude oil and gas.”

Exploitation of the Durra field

Last April, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait announced the activation of two memoranda of understanding between them, to accelerate the development and exploitation of the Al-Durra field, located in the divided zone between the two countries.

divided area

The divided zone between Saudi Arabia and Kuwait includes huge quantities of heavy and medium crude oil, which attracts international oil and energy companies. However, the region has witnessed events for many years that led to the division of its oil production participation, which stopped for 5 years; due to environmental problems.

The area of the divided zone is about 5,770,000 square kilometres, and Saudi Arabia and Kuwait reached an agreement on it for the first time in 1965, when the discovery of oil there motivated the two countries to sign the agreement.

The partition agreement between the two countries, which came into force in June 1970, stipulates that this region is divided into two regions, with Saudi Arabia and Kuwait dominating and imposing their sovereignty and influence on every part of it that belongs to them, provided that the underground wealth is divided between them.
