Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan is the second president of the United Arab Emirates, which was established on December 2, 1971, and the 16th ruler of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, the largest of the seven emirates constituting the federation.

He assumed his federal constitutional powers as President of the State and became Ruler of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi on November 3, 2004, succeeding his father, “the late, God willing,” Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who moved next to his Lord on November 2, 2004.

Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan was born in 1948 in Al Muwaiji Castle in the city of Al Ain. His full name is Khalifa bin Zayed bin Sultan bin Zayed bin Khalifa bin Shakhbut bin Diab bin Isa bin Nahyan bin Falah bin Yas. He is the eldest son of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. His mother is Sheikha Hessa bint Mohammed bin Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

The village of Al Muwaiji was the center of the Al Bu Falah branch of the Bani Yas tribe and the ruling Al Nahyan family.

Sheikh Khalifa belongs to the Bani Yas tribe, which is considered the mother tribe for most of the Arab tribes that settled in the United Arab Emirates, which was historically known as the “Bani Yas Alliance”.

Sheikh Khalifa lived with his family in Al Muwaiji Castle in the city of Al Ain. He received his school education in the city of Al-Ain at the Al-Nahyaniya School, which was established by Sheikh Zayed, may God have mercy on him. He spent most of his childhood in the oases of Al Ain, and Al Buraimi, accompanied by his father, who ruled the Al Ain region at that time.

Sheikh Zayed was keen to accompany his eldest son in most of his activities, and his daily visits, in the Al Ain and Al Buraimi regions. The Al Ain and Al Buraimi oases were of economic and strategic importance to the Emirate of Abu Dhabi as the largest agricultural producer, and as a major strategic center for the region’s security.

Sheikh Khalifa remained loyal to his father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, may God have mercy on him, in his difficult mission to improve the lives of tribes in the region and establish the authority of the state, which had a great impact in teaching him the basic values ​​of responsibility, trust and justice.

Sheikh Khalifa attended the public councils, which was an important school for teaching political leadership skills at the time. Which provided him with a wide opportunity to interact with the concerns of the citizens, and made him close to their aspirations and hopes, and gave him management and communication skills. Sheikh Khalifa saw his father’s dedication to achieving prosperity and well-being for the tribes, his keenness to preserve their security and national unity, and his initiatives in caring for the environment and preserving folklore. And he became convinced that the true leader is the one who cares about the welfare of his people. The sitting of Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed in the councils of his grandfather on the side of his mother, Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa, who was known at the time for his wisdom, was an important addition to his leadership skills.

Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed enjoyed the care of his mother, in addition to special care and attention from his grandmother, “Sheikha Salama”, who was highly respected, for her wisdom and wisdom.

When the late Sheikh Zayed Al Nahyan moved to the city of Abu Dhabi to become the ruler of the emirate in August 1966, he appointed his son Sheikh Khalifa – who was 18 years old at the time – as his representative in the Eastern Province and head of the courts. This delegation was considered evidence of the confidence of the forgiven.

Sheikh Khalifa followed in his father’s footsteps, and continued to implement major development projects in the Eastern Province, especially those aimed at improving agriculture. His remarkable success in Al Ain was the beginning of a long career in the service of the people, and the beginning of assuming his leadership role with ease, and skill recorded by his major achievements.

During the following years, Sheikh Khalifa held a number of key positions, and became the chief executive officer of the government of his father, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan, and assumed the tasks of supervising the implementation of all major projects.

On February 1, 1969, Sheikh Khalifa was nominated as Crown Prince of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. The next day, he assumed the duties of the Defense Department in the emirate.

Sheikh Khalifa established the Department of Defense in Abu Dhabi, which later became the nucleus of the UAE Armed Forces.

On July 1, 1971, as part of the restructuring of the Abu Dhabi government, he was appointed as the ruler of Abu Dhabi and as the local minister of defense and finance in the emirate.

On December 23, 1973, Sheikh Khalifa assumed the position of Deputy Prime Minister in the second Cabinet.

Shortly thereafter, on January 20, 1974, he assumed the duties of chairing the Abu Dhabi Executive Council, which replaced the local government in the emirate.

Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan was elected President of the State on November 3, 2004. He also assumed his duties as ruler of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi following the death of his father, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who was elected the first president of the country on December 2, 1971, until the date of his death on November 2, 2004 .

After his election as President of the UAE, Sheikh Khalifa launched his first strategic plan for the UAE government to achieve balanced and sustainable development and ensure prosperity for citizens.

One of his main goals as President of the United Arab Emirates was to follow the path of his father, who believed in the pioneering role of the UAE as a beacon guiding its people towards a prosperous future in which security and stability prevail.

Sheikh Khalifa has overseen the development of the oil and gas sectors, and manufacturing industries that have contributed with great success to the economic diversification of the country.

He also made extensive tours throughout the United Arab Emirates, studying the needs of the northern emirates, and ordered the construction of a number of housing projects, roads, education projects, and social services.

In addition, he launched an initiative to develop the legislative authority, by amending the mechanism for selecting members of the Federal National Council, in a way that combines election and appointment, allowing the selection of half of the members of the Federal National Council through direct elections by the people of the UAE.

In 2009, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed was re-elected as President of the UAE, and he pledged to continue implementing the ambitious political, administrative, economic, social and cultural development strategies he had begun. His wise leadership and concern for the federal state’s interests were credited with overcoming financial and regional crises.

He is credited with his contribution to the formulation of a military doctrine, derived from the constants of the supreme policy of the state, which is based on a policy of moderation, non-interference in the affairs of others, and respect for mutual interests. In light of these constants, he worked on formulating a defense policy based on maintaining the independence, sovereignty and interests of the state. This policy has contributed to placing the UAE armed forces in an advanced position, earning it the respect of the world.

After assuming the presidency, the first strategic plan of the government of the United Arab Emirates was launched during his reign, and he also launched an initiative to develop the experience of the legislative authority, to modify the method for selecting members of the Federal National Council, so that election and appointment are combined as a first step, which ultimately allows the selection of members of the Council through direct elections.
