Today, Tuesday, a number of farmers who keep livestock (sheep and cows) in the governorate of Monastir closed the road located at the Al-Jarra junction in the city of Moknine and the link between Moknin, Tablaba and Mahdia, in protest against the increase in feed prices, especially compound feed, and to demand a reversal of this increase and increase. In the selling price of milk from the producer to the factory.
The participants in this protest movement denounced the “state’s neglect” of their suffering for years, its “non-recognition of the concerns of the farmer” and the lobbies’ efforts to burden him, as they put it.
The farmer, livestock breeder and member of the local Federation of Agriculture and Fishing in Moknin, Adel Abdel Ghani, said that cattle, sheep and poultry breeders are carrying out a protest against the increase in the price of compound feed by 15 dinars per bag (50 kg), i.e. at 300 dinars per ton. The bankruptcy of the farmer who has been recording loss after loss.
He stressed that the farmers are not advocates of chaos and only wanted to make their voice heard and demand either a retraction of these increases or an increase in the prices of milk, eggs, white and red meat, as they are all linked to each other so that the farmer can achieve a balanced equation between cost and production price.
He considered that if there are no solutions, this will lead to the elimination of farmers, including sheep, cows and poultry breeders, and to the harm of the citizen, and wondered, “How can we live and provide our food at a time when we complain about the lack of hard currency to supply?” Calling for a firm stand.
For his part, the assistant head of the Syndicate of Cow Breeders in Moknin, Mohsen Al-Hammadi, stated that the majority of farmers owe large debts to the cooperative company for basic services “Al-Tawfiq” in Moknin, for example, he has debts exceeding 25 thousand dinars.
Al-Hammadi added that the increase of 150 millimeters per liter of milk that was previously negotiated does not cover the old cost, so what will be the case with the new increase in the price of fodder, expecting these increases to continue.
He referred to the suffering of farmers in various sectors of milk, eggs, irrigating plants and others for years, stressing their rejection of the increase in the price of fodder and their demand for an increase in the price of milk to cover the old cost.
He stated that the milk complex in Moknin recorded in the period 2011-2016 the collection of about 40,000 liters of milk, with the quantity currently declining between 18,000 and 17,000 liters.
Mohsen bin Aziza, a livestock breeder in Al-Maknin, (he owns a herd of 130 sheep and 50 cows), stated that the price of milk has not changed since the price of a bag of fodder was 46 dinars until its price today is 83 dinars, in addition to the livestock suffering from malnutrition. In light of the deterioration in the quality of fodder, its quantity decreased, and they incurred great hardships in obtaining it.
For his part, Brik, a farmer in his seventies, considered that there is a will to strike farmers and the livestock sector in Tunisia, to move after that towards the supply of milk and meat, and to destroy the country, according to his opinion.
