The Moroccan Football Association denied the recent news about the dismissal of the coach of the Moroccan national team, Bosnian Vahid Halilhodzic, who led the “Atlas Lions” to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
In an official statement, the federation said: “In response to what was reported by some websites and the news they published stating that the decision to dismiss Vahid Halilhodzic was taken by the Royal Moroccan Football Federation on Monday, May 2, and in an effort to enlighten public opinion and remove all confusion, it was not carried out. There is no meeting today between the university president and the coach.” And the statement added: “Haliluzic, who is still on vacation outside Morocco, will join the Mohammed VI stadium this week, as previously announced.”
A critical meeting is scheduled between the president of the Moroccan Federation, Faouzi Lekjaa, and the Bosnian coach, after returning from his vacation, during which his fate will be decided at the head of the technical management of the “Atlas Lions”.
According to press reports, the Moroccan Federation took the decision to dismiss Halilhodzic because of his statements in which he responded to the president of the Federation, Faouzi Lekja, regarding the return of the excluded; Chelsea player Hakim Ziyech and Ajax player Nassir Mazraoui are in the Morocco squad, to participate in the World Cup in Qatar at the end of this year.
Ziyech, 29, had announced in early February his retirement from international football, after a dispute with Halilhodzic, who accused him of disrespect, which threatens the group’s cohesion, according to the coach. The same applies to Nasir Mazraoui, who refused the coach’s invitation because of his marginalization and accusation. He explicitly lied in a previous post on his Instagram account.
Halilhodzic was criticized for his tactical choices and the squad for the Moroccan national team, despite qualifying for the World Cup, as the fans demand that the duo Ziyech and Mazraoui be returned, which the Bosnian coach rejects.
