The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has strong and historical relations with the Republic of Chad, based on mutual respect and joint cooperation, and relations date back to 1972, when the two embassies were opened in Riyadh and N’Djamena.

The visit of King Faisal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud – may God have mercy on him – in November 1972 AD, and his meeting with the first Chadian president after independence, François Tempelbaye, is a great leap and an important station in the relations between the two countries, and he established – may God have mercy on him – the King Faisal Islamic Center (a mosque, schools and a clinic). Healthy) in the capital, N’Djamena, and is currently one of the largest mosques in the continent of Africa.

In appreciation of the Chadian people for the Saudi support for their country, it was established in the year 1991 AD, by a university civil initiative bearing the name of King Faisal in recognition of his founding in the period between 1972 AD and 1974 AD, an Islamic center that became a landmark of Islamic civilization in the capital, N’Djamena, and this university achieved an advanced level within the educational institutions higher in Chad.

In continuation of the exchange of visits, His Excellency the President of the Republic of Chad, Idriss Deby Itno, visited the Kingdom in November 2015. He met the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, may God protect him. During the visit, he also met with the Crown Prince, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense Prince Muhammad bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud.

The President of Chad, Idriss Deby Itno, also participated in a visit to the work of the Islamic Summit in Makkah Al-Mukarramah in May 2019.

Following the transfer of power to the Transitional Military Council headed by General Mohamed Idriss Deby Itno, Chadian Foreign Minister Sherif Mohamed Zein made two official visits to the Kingdom in June and November 2021 AD. In November 2021, Chad also sent a delegation to the Kingdom that included former ministers; With the aim of holding consultative meetings with the Chadian community in preparation for their participation in the comprehensive national dialogue to be held in N’Djamena on 5/10/2022.

These meetings strengthened and developed relations to include cooperation in various fields to serve the interests of the two countries and for the benefit of the two friendly peoples, and resulted in the signing of a number of agreements, including:

• An agreement in the field of employment of domestic workers signed in Riyadh on 19/1/1437 AH corresponding to 11/1/2015 AD.

• A cooperation agreement between the Kingdom and Chad in the field of combating terrorism and illicit trafficking and smuggling of narcotics and psychotropic substances, signed in Riyadh on 6/11/1433 AH.

• A cooperation agreement between the Kingdom and Chad in the field of youth and sports, signed in Riyadh on 11/22/1421 AH.

• Memorandum of Understanding between the two civil aviation authorities in the two countries, signed on 4/2/1974 AD.

The Kingdom asserts that it is a major supporter of development plans in Chad, and is keen to enhance cooperation in order to achieve economic stability and social welfare in the country.

The Kingdom commends the progress achieved by the reforms adopted by the Government of Chad; With the aim of alleviating its debt burdens, the Kingdom, together with France, chairs the Chad Creditors Committee under the joint framework for debt treatment beyond the scope of the initiative to suspend debt service payments.

In this regard, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, in April 2021, co-chaired the first meeting of the Creditors Committee on Chad’s request to address its debt under the joint framework for debt treatment beyond the scope of the initiative to suspend debt service payments.

The Kingdom supports the efforts of the Republic of Chad in the field of combating terrorism, as it is one of the member states of the Islamic Military Coalition to Combat Terrorism, and plays an active role in combating it on the African continent, as it participated in confronting terrorist groups in each of the Lake Chad Basin countries (Niger, Nigeria and Cameroon). As well as in the Azawad region, Mali.

In the economic and cultural fields, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is a major contributor to the development of the Republic of Chad through grants and soft loans provided by the Kingdom through the Saudi Fund for Development to Chad. As well as the Kingdom’s contribution to the education of a number of Chadian students through scholarships offered by Saudi universities.

The Kingdom is a major supporter of development plans in Chad, through grants and soft loans provided by the Saudi Fund for Development, and cash and in-kind assistance through United Nations specialized organizations and agencies and other regional organizations and bodies, and is keen to strengthen cooperation with them in order to achieve economic stability and social welfare in the country.

The Kingdom provided assistance to the Republic of Chad through the Saudi Fund for Development during the period (1975-2016), including:

– A loan to support economic development in Chad in the amount of (57) million riyals.

– A loan for the construction of the central market in the capital, N’Djamena, in the amount of (40) million riyals,

– A loan to pave the road linking the two cities of Angourie Paul, amounting to (93.75) million riyals.

– a loan to contribute to the financing of the vocational education development project in the amount of (112.5) million riyals,

– A grant in the amount of (7) million US dollars to implement the project of drilling wells and rural development in Chad within the framework of the fifth phase of the Saudi Program for Drilling Wells and Rural Development in Africa.

The Kingdom supports the Republic of Chad annually with cash and in-kind assistance on various occasions, as it provides tons of sacrificial meat and sacrifice and sends large quantities of dates to the Chadian government.

The volume of trade exchange between the Kingdom and Chad in 2021 amounted to about $18 million, of which $3 million is Saudi exports to Chad (of which $2 million is non-oil exports, down 56% compared to 2020), and $15 million is imports from it, and the trade balance achieved a surplus in favor of Chad with a value of $12 million, and sesame seeds are the most important Saudi import, with a value of $14.474 million.

Building materials, vehicles and spare parts are among the Kingdom’s most important exports to Chad, while food products, heavy machinery and electronics are the highest imports reaching the Saudi market.

Future cooperation opportunities with Chad in the field of energy include partnership in energy access projects in Africa, projects of electric power generators and small generation networks in remote areas, renewable energy projects and technologies, benefiting from investment opportunities in this field, and exchanging experiences in the field of energy efficiency. Study and research on geothermal energy.

The two countries can cooperate in the areas of developing public transport and infrastructure projects, such as roads, airports and utilities, as well as projects to develop and use appropriate technologies for agriculture, such as agricultural mechanization, so that these projects contribute to an increase in demand for Saudi petroleum derivatives.

Based on the directives of the wise leadership – may God support it – the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center implemented, until March 31, 2022 AD, 13 projects in the Republic of Chad with a total value of $4,684,742, including 10 projects in food security, two projects in health, and one in education.
