After a season of tank talks, Spurs fans finally found out where the team stands in the upcoming NBA Draft. The Spurs, who had a late-season rally for a play-in spot, received its highest draft slot since 1997. The Silver and Black will be picking 9th overall.

The Spurs chances of getting a pick between No. 1 and No. 4 were slim, but fans still held out hope that lady luck would be in San Antonio’s favor in Chicago on Tuesday night, May 17. Some even vowed to get tattoos if it happened. Ultimately, the Spurs will have the 9th, 20th, and 25th picks in the first round.

In 1997, the Spurs got the No. 1 overall draft pick, landing Wake Forrest’s Tim Duncan. We all know how that pick played out. Last year, the Spurs picked young guard Josh Primo at No. 12.

This year, the Orlando Magic got the top pick. With it, they’re in a good spot to draft standouts like Auburn’s Jabari Smith Jr., Gonzaga’s Chet Holmgren, or Duke’s Paolo Banchero. The Magic is joined in the top 5 by the Oklahoma City Thunder, Houston Rockets, Sacramento Kings, and Detroit Pistons.

June 23 is the date to remember to see how the No. 9 spot turns out for the Spurs. The draft will be hosted at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn and is televised on ESPN.

As with any Spurs news, the No. 9 pick sparked a Twitter conversation among fans. Get caught up below.
