Don't be greedy Dallas, San Antonio deserves an NFL team

“We are about to pass the Chicago metro and become the #3 metro in the US, which would make us the largest US metro WITHOUT 2 teams,” Johnson tweeted on Friday, May 5. “Football is king here. Dallas needs an expansion team and we would be able to sustain 2
@NFL teams better than LA or NY.”

OK, Dallas. Maybe you could sustain two teams. However, let’s not be greedy. Why don’t we throw San Antonio’s name in the mix? San Antonio ranks as the seventh-largest city in the United States with 1.4 million people, according to a report from moving.com.

Among the top 10 cities, San Antonio is the only city without an NFL team. Those teams include the New York Giants (No. 1), Los Angeles Rams (No. 2), Chicago Bears (No. 3), Houston Texans (No. 4), Arizona Cardinals (based in Phoenix, No. 5), and Philadelphia Eagles (No. 6). Dallas landed at No. 9.

In response to a recent article posted by NFL on CBS on Twitter seeking opinions on which city is deserving of an NFL expansion franchise, Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson threw the city's hat into the ring. But, let's talk about San Antonio.

You don’t need another team. You have the Dallas Cowboys (who I love very much but would share the love if SA had a team). It’s not like San Antonio doesn’t have football fans.

The city turned a lot of heads after hosting the San Antonio Commanders from the Alliance of American Football in 2019. The league ceased football operations the same year because, well, most minor league football leagues can’t compare to the NFL. However, during its run, San Antonio had given the Commanders strong support, averaging 27,720 fans for the team’s four home games at the Alamodome.

In the past, San Antonio flirted with being the potential home for an NFL team. In 2016, there was speculation that the Oakland Raiders, who ended up moving to Las Vegas in 2020, would make the Alamo City their new home. After Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the Alamodome hosted a handful of New Orleans Saints games. But, San Antonio was overlooked.

We aren’t the only ones who think so. In January 2021, Mayor Ron Nirenberg told KSAT that he believes San Antonio will become an NFL city within 10 years. Let’s make it happen, Nirenberg.
