Decorated WNBA player Becky Hammon marked her first home game as Las Vegas Aces head coach over the weekend as the Aces began the season at 2-0. Though her new role with the WNBA moved her out of her position on Spurs coach Gregg Popovich’s bench, Hammon had San Antonio on her side as the Aces defeated the Seattle Storm, 85-74, on Sunday, May 8.

Spurs star Dejounte Murray showed up in Las Vegas to watch the Mother’s Day game at Ultra Arena at Mandalay Bay. In addition to supporting Hammon’s new team, Murray was able to watch the Storm, his hometown’s WNBA franchise, in action.

Along with the Spurs connection between Hammon and Murray, there’s also a connection with Kelsey Plum. She was drafted first overall by the San Antonio Stars (now the Aces) in 2017, one year after Murray joined the Spurs. Before that, Plum played at the University of Washington at the same time as Murray.

Murray got a shoutout on the Aces Instagram for showing up to the support Hammon at the home-opener.

“Love to see it! Doesn’t have to but just shows his character,” a reply by joemarquez20 says.

Murray shared his own posts from the game, including a rally of support for women’s basketball.

“Support The WNBA. They Can Really Hoop,” his post says. “Great Game @seattlestorm And @lvaces.”

During his busy weekend of travel and celebrating Mother’s Day with his family, Murray also made time to do something nice for the moms. On Instagram he announced a $15,000 giveaway to gift a few hundred dollars to single moms.

“I Was Raised By A Single Mother So It’s Only Right That I Give Back To The Single Mothers,” his post says.
